Studio Brief 01 - Change of direction

There has been two main influencers in my change of direction within graphic design so far this year. Firstly was visiting Berlin and secondly was working collaboratively on the D&AD Monotype brief. Both have helped me to figure out more of what I like about design and where I want my practice to go from this point onwards.

Before both of these events I had been very unsure about where I want my practice to go and what I was really interested in doing. I have always been interested in editoral design everything that is involved with this but I have never been fully sure of what direction this could take me in.

The research trip to Berlin was massively eye opening for me it showed me a different side to design that I was not so familiar with. When visiting EPS 51 this is where I realised that how they work and the style of work that they are producing was far from what I would want to be doing, the idea of working with culturally based clients and producing work that excites me seems a lot better than working for big corporate companies just producing websites and boring advertising work. I am now taking much more of an interest in the typography and the ways it can be used within editoral design, I also felt that a lot of work of this style would still link very well to the fashion based work that I am passionate about.

The Monotype brief that I did with Tom and Joe was the first time that I had thought about creating work purely based with typography. The brief has been the most exciting brief that I have worked on while on the course, it has enabled me to do all sort of roles that before changing the way I thought about design I would have been less inclined to do.

Now that I have a better understanding of how I want to work, from this point onwards I will be identify people, design work, exhibitions, anything that relates to me new found interests so that I can understand as much as I can because there is much more to learn and I am now very excited about what I can do now that I have found the style of work that fits me and my ethics of design.
