Studio Brief 01 - JW Anderson Exhibition

DISOBEDIENT BODIES: JW ANDERSON CURATES THE HEPWORTH WAKEFIELD

The exhibition is a newly created space that is showcasing the human form in art, fashion and design. There is personal selection of sculptures on display, alongside notable fashion pieces and objects of craft and design, investigating the way the human form has been reconceived by artists and designers across the 20th and 21st centuries, which makes for a very interesting exhibition like something I have never seen before. The selection is shaped by Anderson’s long-standing passion for modern art and the underlying questions of gender that have been posed by his own fashion collections at JW Anderson

Sadly I was unable to make the opening night which would have been good for talking to people, but we were able to visit the a week or so later which made it better as it was not very busy which meant we were able to get a really good look at the exhibits.

When I highlighted studios earlier on this year I mentioned OK-RM were a studio that I liked the work from and could get in contact with. They have done the exhibition design/branding for this exhibition and think they did a very good job of doing so, it design is challenging current styles and trends which helps to draw in the crowd as the posters and advertising for the space was unlike most advertising I have seen before. However
OK-RM are well known for their exhibition design and this very much up their street and suits the way they design/think very well. Another part of what they did was the publication for the exhibition which helps to contextualise the all of the work in a beautifully put together book, which is also very unconventional and it is interesting to see them produce with the way they have done it, but it works a long side the exhibition very well.

I have not thought about how impactful the design/branding for an exhibition can be, but this has shown me what can be done. The way the pace was designed and the assets that have been used to tie to all together are very innovative and I would like to experiment with this area of design as it does require other aspects of design that I am interested in, so I would like to see how I could do it all together.
