North Design - http://www.northdesign.co.uk/
Their main focus is on branding and identities which is something that I increasing find more interesting as I see less commercial design studios getting work for larger corporations. They seem to be making the boring everyday brands that we all use a lot more interesting with new innovative design. For example their recent re-brand of the
CO-OP is very playful and helps to strengthen the current brand that they have already got. Other recent work like the re-design of Tate also really interests me as working with cultural clients is an area of design that I support much more than any other area because I feel that you are a lot more freedom and it would be more appreciated by the target audience.
I am going to get in contact with North as I would like to learn more about them and they would fit perfectly with the route of design that I want to take in the future and I feel that I would be able to learn a lot from a small studio like this.
Spencer Fenton - spencerfenton.co.uk/
The London based studio, where they work with commissions and collaborators in the cultural and commercial fields across the disciplines of graphic design, art direction and type design. Their practice is defiantly very trendy but this is not what stands out to me, the work they are producing is new and unseen by a lot of people. What I like the most about this studio is style of art direction that they have created which links very nicely to their heavily contextual focus on graphic design, which is something that I am starting to appreciate more as my practice evolves. I would be very interested to learn a lot more about them by talking with them about their practice and how they find working in the cultural sector of graphic design.
Lisa Guedel-Dolle - l-gd.fr/home-en
French graphic designer based in Paris, working on commissioned and self initiated projects in the cultural fields of architecture, art, photography and music. With a strong focus on editorial design and printed matter, she aims to assert the identity and uniqueness of her clients through simple and precise design choices.
I am very fond of designers that focus on photography as I like to try and incorporate photography into my work when appropriate. It is interesting to see how other do so and make a living from it. I also really like the style of work that Lisa has and I feel that this style of design should be noticed more, although I feel that a lot people may just think about the aesthetics more than the actual context of the work being produced.
IYA Studio - iyastudio.co.uk
IYA are an independent creative studio working collaboratively with their clients to produce design they are proud of. As a studio they work across multiple disciplines and platforms to engage clients in exciting and innovative ways. They only tend work with brand/clients that they associate themselves with, I find this very interesting as this means they are working with independent fashion brands and doing editoral design for brands that they want to work with, among other great branding and web work. They are a jack of all trades and I feel that you have to be like this in the design industry right now to keep up with everything and get the work you want to get.
OK-RM - ok-rm.co.uk
The studio is a collaborative practice engaged in ongoing partnerships with artists, curators, editors, architects, designers and institutions. Recent commissions include the exhibition design and campaign for Fear and Love (Design Museum), visual identities for Manus × Machina (The Met, New York), the British Pavilion in Venice, and Under the Same Sun (Guggenheim, New York).
Their art direction aims to engage clients and collaborators in a process that not only communicates who they are but clarifies what they are. Whether it’s a book or a visual identity, their designs seek to reflect a set of core values. This way of working often leads to ongoing relationships that track the evolution of a brand or body of work. OK-RM are to be pushing the boundaries of contemporary graphic design and creating new trends, which is what appeals to a lot of young emerging designers as well as being respected by the design industry.
