John Peel Lecture - By Brian Eno - OUGD402

John Peel Lecture - By Brian Eno //

The John Peel lecture, presented by Brian Eno was very enlightening talking; Eno presented a number of statements that I would fun agree with the it comes to the creative industry. While listening too the lecture I made some notes of key things that he said and I would just like to expand on what he has said.

Is Art a Luxury?

There is right or wrong answer to this question but I believe that art can be very seen as a luxury for a couple of reasons. The first reason would be that do we really need art, is art just something we do as an added extra? We don't need art to survive on this planet, but art is a way of life for many creatives. So yes, in someways we need art to be alive, we need to allowed to be creative, to express our thoughts though different medias. Some could call art a luxury, these people are the non-creatives not that there is anything wrong with them but how are they meant to express themselves? I believe that in this day and age that we live in that art is a necessity for some, but for others it just another part of this massive environment that we all live in, and these people would see it as everything you don't have to have, you need clothes and food but do you really need art? I think yes as a form of expression whether is music or still life painting it should be something everyone can do.

Why do we where clothes?

This is a very good point raised by Eno, he says that we have to wear clothes as part of every day life, but the way that the media is and the culture we live in, we like to stylise everything weather that clothes or just what goes into our houses, we like to make it ours.
When I pick something I want to wear in the morning, I will pick it because I want for myself not because i believe others like it. I believe the creative industry should be more like this, in the way that people need to do more for themselves and think about personal style more than conforming.

"Children learn through play and adults learn though art"

I think this is a very important to take into consideration, we as adults continue to do art because we don't want too stop playing like we did as children. Why should we? Like when a child plays they can express themselves, so when we are doing art we can express our thoughts through different types of media, ways which you couldn't do without art. This is why the creative culture in the world today is still so vibrant.
