While in London I wanted to visit a number of places that interest me and relate to my practice. As the Design Museum has recently moved locations, I wanted to check out the new building and the general opening exhibition has I did not have enough time to go and see the other exhibitions. The building is crazy, inside and out they have really shown why buildings should be well designed as it almost makes it worth going just to see the building.
The posters for the upcoming and current shows are very well put together and the way they have displayed them against the concrete all makes it stand out. The current show, FEAR AND LOVE is another one done by OK-RM and I really like the use of the bold typography as it is simple and effective they have no over complicated the branding. It was very enjoyable looking at all the content that was around gather inspiration and just taking in all of the design.
The inside of the building is a great example of mixture between old and new, and it compliments what they have got on show inside. There is not many museums and buildings that have such innovative interior and exterior.
Inside the open exhibition which was called Designer, Maker, User was all sorts of work, a lot of it was introducing what design is and how it we all interact with different type of design in everyday life. I took many photos of some of the design that I really liked specially as a lot of it was older (well-known) that I was unfamiliar with, which has made me want to look further into the stuff that I saw to find out who did it.
I also found some information that linked very nicely with my COP project and I can use what it said below to back up/research some of the points that I made in my essay. I found the visit to the Design Museum very useful and i would like to go back to check out future exhibitions as there is a very high quality of design on display, they really have shown how design exhibitions should be done.
London
Living in Leeds means it is difficult to get back down to London to check out what is going on in smaller spaces like book stores, concept shops and other design related activities. Everywhere you go in central to east London it is covered in creative places and it is great to walk around and see what is going on and check out things I might have seen through social media, it is also a great chance to talk to other creatives in places like these.
One of my biggest questions is whether you need to be in London to be a designer these days, and I think my answer to that right now is no. Although there is SO much going on with a lot to offer for a young designer which you would miss out on if you're not in London I don't think it is essential to be in London straight away after leaving university.
