Studio Brief 02 - Contacting Studios

Studio brief 02 requires me to get in contact with designers and studios so that I can create a report about their practice this will help me to engage with new people and start to make contacts within the design industry. After identifying a number of designers/studios that I wanted to get into contact with for studio brief 02 I took the time to email each studio/designer in the hope that they would be up for taking part in a an interview, which I would then use to turn into my creative report.

Over the past year of studying graphic design and starting to get involved with design community I have found that one of the best ways to get a reply from someone is through social media, in this case Instagram. It is a great way to ask someone a few questions but in this case I wanted more that just a few questions, so I thought the best way to introduce myself would be through Instagram.

Studio IYA

The initial contact through Instagram worked well and I was able to email over my questions. I understood that they could have been very busy but they got back to me fast and it was very interesting to talk to emerging designers about how they got into the industry and their transition from university into full time work as these are the sort of things that I am now facing moving into level 06.

I took a couple days to come up with the questions as I wanted to make sure that I was getting the information that I was looking for. I directed my questions more at Jake as I felt it would be more beneficial for me to talk to someone who is new to the industry and has not long left university. I got a good response from these questions and it was very interesting to talk to someone that you don't know and find out more about them and how they work.

The answers that I got back from Jake were very informative they gave me the answers that I was looking for, I am trying to use this brief to learn as much as I can about what to do to make the transition from uni to industry as smooth as possible. I have gained valuable advice and this had also made me start thinking about how I can collate this information and what the best format would be.

Now that I have made this connection with Jake and IYA I am hoping to keep in contact like he said and get some feedback/advice of going forward in my practice. Towards the end of the term I want to get back in contact Jake to speak to him about a studio visit or meeting up for a coffee to give me some feedback on my work.

Breaks Agency

This was one of the studios that I was most keen to reach out to because of the work that they have been producing. So I was very happy when I got a quick response from Sam who is one of the founders of the agency, I thought that it would be easier to contact him personally as this account does not have as many followers which meant the chance of getting a reply was higher.

Unfortunately I think that I caught Sam at a bit of a bad time, after I received this message I took the time to email over the questions that I had come up with. After the initial communication between us I am yet to get a response to the my email, of course they are a working business and they have bigger things to worry about. However I still would like to get talking with Sam and I will try and make further contact with him over the coming months and over the summer I will be able to take some time to talk to people like this.

Others

For studios like OK-RM, Mash Creative, Spencer Fenton and North I felt that it these may not reply through social media. So I took the more formal route of emailing asking the same sort of thing but more formal, so far these studios have not got back to me. But I am not disheartened as I understand that they are very busy at this time of year, I will also be able to use the content that I have got from Jake at IYA to form a creative report. I also feel that this means my report would work better if I focus it on one studio rather than a couple of studios that may not all do the same thing, as this would make it more difficult to inform.

From this stage onwards I will be working with the questions and answers I got from IYA to start putting together by response for studio brief 02. If I get contacted by any of the studios after this, I will be sure to document that on my blog but I am committing to producing my report on IYA from this point onwards.
